          How Does Chiropractic Work?

The purpose of Chiropractic care is to restore and maintain the health of the whole person, not just treating isolated symptoms or diseases. It focuses on improving quality of life--restoring and maintaining normal FUNCTION of our structure, joints, muscles and the nervous system. Function includes range of motion, flexibility, stability, strength and coordination.

Improving function is the KEY to long term pain relief. Failure to restore function means that any pain relief is temporary, and your risk of chronic pain increases. Joints that have good function are not painful, perform better and are less likely to be injured or degenerate. Poor function can lead to injury and pain.

When there are restrictions around joints that the body is unable to overcome itself (such as muscle spasm, swelling, scar tissue and pain), chiropractic helps to minimize pain and maximize function by the use of adjustments, exercise and other methods. Adjustments specifically applied to joints can restore motion when the body's own muscles cannot, helping to relieve pain and restore and maintain normal movement, biomechanics and function.

How long does it take to see results?

Experiencing the benefits of chiropractic care (pain relief, tissue healing and improved function) may require different amounts of time to achieve each of these goals.  For example, pain relief doesn't mean the tissues have healed, or that function is restored. If often takes more time for tissues to fully heal than to realize pain relief. It may take more time to restore function than it takes for tissues to heal. Dr. Robin monitors where a patient is at, using specific outcome measures. No matter where you are at in the healing process, it is recommended to be adjusted at least once a month to keep pain under control and maintain optimal movement, biomechanics and function.

    Did you know...

The discs in the spine live because of movement?  Since a joint that can't move can't nourish itself, this is vital to the survival of our discs and joints. Whether they are painful or not, adjustments to the joints, combined with exercise, help restore and maintain normal motion and allow nutrition to the joints and discs. Since discs and cartilage have no blood supply, an exchange of nutrients and wastes only occurs by physically pumping fluids into and out of the disc via spinal motion. Movement stirs fluid through joints, washing nutrients in and waste products out. Lack of motion may lead to poor nutrition and disc degeneration.
